~*~ About 88x31 ~*~
88x31 is a club for collecting, gifting and trading those tiny 88×31 buttons from the early web. Pull new buttons every day, keep your favorites, pass extras on to friends, and stamp gifts into each other's guestbooks.
» The Ledger «
Every button copy has a number (like Neon Nite #12 of 50), and every time one changes hands, it gets written down: who it came from, who it went to, when, and why (a daily pull, a gift, a guestbook stamp, a trade...).
New button designs go in the ledger too, the moment they're added: a fingerprint of the artwork, its rarity, how many copies can ever exist, and where the art came from (its source, author and license). So nobody can quietly swap a button's picture, change its credits, or print extra copies later.
All of these entries are chained together like a blockchain, but without the crypto. Each entry gets a fingerprint, a hash made from that entry plus the fingerprint of the entry before it. So every fingerprint depends on the whole history behind it.
That means nobody can quietly rewrite the past, not even us. If one old entry were changed, its fingerprint would stop matching, and so would every fingerprint after it. The site re-checks the whole chain every time this page loads.
Anyone can save the latest fingerprint below and check back later. If the history is honest, today's chain will still lead to the fingerprint you saved.
Good to know:
- The ledger tracks who owns which copy. It doesn't stop anyone saving a picture of a button, but only the ledger says whose copy is the real #12.
- Buttons are just for fun. They can't be bought or sold for real money.
- If a player deletes their account, their name disappears from the ledger (it shows as "a former player"), and the chain still checks out.

This removes your account, your guestbook, the messages you left on other guestbooks, and your buttons. Buttons you already gave away stay with their new owners. This can't be undone.
